Cheapest possible gaming rig?
« on: March 11, 2010, 08:26:12 PM »
Well I know most (if not all) of us have a Dream rig in mind, but I'm trying to build a slightly more affordable machine.
Basically I'm trying to build the best budget gaming rig for as little money as possible, so far I have the following down;
Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H   $109
X-Sonic 2003 BLACK 460watt   $49
Kingston KVR1333D3N9/2G 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3 $69
AMD Athlon II X2 240 $69
HIS HD5750 1GB GDDR5 $1593
All up I think $455 is pretty good, anyone got any advice/ comments?

PSU

Don't worry about it being 400W, it'll shit all over anything else in the 400-600W range.

Slight dearer, but better for long term.

Also aren't you missing a case? And a HDD and a DVD drive... don't tell me you're going to be using some IDE crap?

Well most of that does look ok for a budget gaming rig
I will suggest if you can afford it to get 4gb ram it will make a big difference
Also I am not sure about that power supply I have seen crappy power supplies kill system way to many times (I don't know the brand so I can't be sure if it is good or not) below is a recommendation

Also don't you think that is a bit much for a video card lol

Edit: Damn you Crusader beat me to the PSU part

Lol thanks for the advice!  ;D I was looking at those GPU's on that exact website a while ago and couldn't pick the difference, I'm guessing Sapphire are a better manufacturer?

Haha nah i freakin hate IDE, I've already got some SATAII drives from my current build to use.
Thanks for the advice dude  ;)

Ah I was hoping faster RAM (DDR3) would beat more RAM (lol DDR), but i guess for now it should do, this is more of a temporary build that i can choose to upgrade later, also yeah its probably a bit better graphics card than neccessary, any good alternatives you know of?

Cheers man  ;D

A 57** is never "too much of a GPU". They're mid-range cards, not shit but only average. Anything less and you're not going to be playing games with decent settings/FPS - so just sticking with a 5770 is your best bet.

A 512MB card running dual screen... brilliant. No one bother with anything less than 1GB cards nowa-days unless you're still using a useless 4:3 monitor and don't plan on upgrading it anytime soon - by that I mean upgrading it EVER.

What of it??? You should know better than that Crusader.

The question to ask is what does he want on the screens as opposed to just saying a 512mb card won't run dual screen...

If like me you just use it to watch movies and browse the web/chat at the same time (even in HD upto 1080) then yer... Pretty much any current GFX card will do... I run a 512mb card in my laptop and desktop and never have any probs dual screening...

The question is how much time you spend gaming and if you think it's really worth the investment for those few extra pixels. Sure it looks fucking shiny but there may in fact be other things to spend money on than a 1gb GFX card that won't get used to anywhere near capacity...

I was referring to gaming on two+ screens with only a 512MB card at high resolution, I highly doubt it would go down well. IMO it doesn't matter how much time you plan on gaming at those res' with dual+ monitors (assuming you game at all), it's not expensive to get a 1GB version of a GPU and be safe from running out of VRAM on high/est settings(like, $50 in some cases).
Obviously most cards in existence will run dual monitor fine, but when it comes to high-end gaming at high settings, you're best bet is to get a 1GB card.

It should also be noted that i still only have 512mb as sli only uses the mem on one card
I have no problem running dual screen and we only really have one game that uses dual screen in game so i see no problem
And $50 is alot of money to some pepole
